Tox-Away Day: Time to spring clean!

Tox-Away Day: Time to spring clean!

By Lindsay Doty

The first Tox-Away Day for 2019 will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6 at Brownsburg High School, 1000 South Odell Street.

Residents can bring household hazardous waste including pesticides, unwanted or expired medicine, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, automotive fluids, oil-based paints, solvents and much more, free of charge.

Problem wastes like tires, electronics, and appliances are also accepted for recycling. Fees apply for the recycling of appliances ($5/$10), TVs ($20/$25) and tires (after a certain number).

Organizers say the Tox Away program has been an ongoing success. They do five a year.

“The most important thing we do is really connect Hendricks County residents with outlets for the stuff they need to get rid of,” Lenn Detwiler, executive director of the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District, said.

Drivers are asked to enter from Odell Street and stay in their vehicles while organizers do the unloading so the line moves quicker.

Residents should also avoid bringing latex paint. Instead, it should be dried out and disposed of with normal household trash.

The events are open to Hendricks County residents only. Regulations prohibit the acceptance of wastes from other entities such as businesses, schools, churches and non-profits.
