Hendricks County Garden Club celebrates the anniversary of women’s right to vote with free online event

One hundred years ago, women’s suffrage was a controversial idea, that even some women opposed. Fighting for the right to vote included courage, hard work, and lots of activism.
On August 26, 1920, Indiana ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution – finally giving women the right to vote. Indiana was the 26th state to do adopt it.
To mark the centennial, the Hendricks County Garden Club is celebrating with a free Zoom discussion Wednesday evening.
Presented live, the H.C. Garden Club welcomes retired executive director of the Indiana Commission for Women, Sharon Langlotz for an informative and fun presentation and discussion.
Special opening comments will be shared by Leah K. Nahmias of the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission.
“All women should be aware of what our foremothers did in 1920 that is so relevant to today in 2020,” said Deloris Elza, president of the Hendricks County Garden Club.
“We’ve been encouraging people to plant their 2020 gardens in the colors of the movement – purple, yellow and white. And now we are thrilled to have Sharon and Leah join us and share their enthusiasm and knowledge about the history of the movement.”
The Hendricks County chapter has planted flowers of those colors at the Plainfield I-70 rest stop.
In times of social distancing, club leaders have opened the event to everyone.
