It’s all peachy

By Lindsay Doty

Beasley’s Orchard in Danville has some guests from the south. They’re a bit messy but very sweet.

The fresh, flavorful peach is a soft and warm drippy delight with a hint of tang that’s hidden under a layer of fuzz. The popular peaches come to Danville from Cooley Farms in South Carolina.

“We have been sourcing peaches from this family farm for over 20 years and they have yet to disappoint,” Beasley’s Orchard Agritourism Manager Jim Finley said. “They are great for pies, cobblers, muffins, and any other baked good of your choice. They are also delicious in ice creams, smoothies, and more. They are easy to freeze and use all year.”

Beasley’s Orchard sells the peaches in their Farm Market by the pound or half-bushel from summer through September.

“During peak season, we go through nearly 2,000 pounds of peaches a week,” Finley said.

In response to the demand, the orchard is hosting its second annual Peach Party on July 27 where guests can pick up the fruit baskets at a discounted rate of $35 a half-bushel.

“Peaches become freestone peaches in July, meaning the pit easily comes out of the fruit, allowing for the peach to be great for cooking as well as eating. They are also at their juiciest, sweetest, and most delicious during peak season,” explains Finley.

The event will also have discounted produce, free samples of homemade peach cobbler and other treats.
