Drink for the dogs and cats: Beer and wine tasting and pet costume contest raise money for Hendricks County Humane Society

The Hendricks County Humane Society is gearing up for its COME! SIT! STAY! Wine, Beer, and Spirits Tasting.  The 15th  annual event raises money to help operate the Hendricks County Humane Society’s animal and educational programs.

“We have a spay and neuter program where we can provide financing so Hendricks County residents can get their pets spayed and neutered for free or at a discounted price,” said organizer Carol Battistini with the Hendricks County Humane Society.

The organization does about 500 operations a year to help control pet overpopulation. They also have an unexpected medical expense fund for unforeseen pet health issues.

The HCHC relies on community funding and organizers hope to raise $20,000 at the Nov. 1 event.

The tasting sold out at 240 tickets, but people can still participate in the silent auction that includes a luxury getaway and holiday gift baskets.

The community sponsors are already stepping up to help. Hendricks Power Cooperative is holding an online Halloween pet costume photo contest. For every photo liked and shared, they’re donating $1 to the Hendricks County Humane Society up to $500.

People can still submit photos through Halloween on the Hendricks Power Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HendricksPower/ or e-mail photos to ehammell@hendrickspower.com.

The top three winners will be announced by November 15th on the Hendricks Power Facebook page.

The contest is getting a warm response on social media. There’s something about a cat dressed in a superhero costume, Chihuahua touting a unicorn hat or a cat jockey ready for the Kentucky Derby that makes Halloween a little more festive, at least for the human companions.

“I vote every day. I liked the dog dressed as a sumo wrestler,” laughs Battistini, who is forever grateful for the sponsors who have pitched in.
