Globally, millions of people are angered, shocked and saddened by the recent homicide of George Floyd. Thousands worldwide have protested.
A local mother, feeling helpless after Floyd’s death, has created a fundraiser, called “Moms for George.” “As a mama, I wanted to run to him and comfort him,” said Maggie Hutton, a Center Grove resident. “I wanted to save him. He wasn’t my baby, but he was someone’s child. I wanted to help. I cried to my friends. They wanted to help, too. So, here we are, making cookies and baked goods, grieving the loss of George Floyd and mourning with our black community. We understand that we will never understand. But we see you and we will fight.”
Hutton invites the community to order baked goods from the website she created: momsforgeorge.com. Baked goods include sugar cream pie, chocolate chip cookies, banana bread and M&M cookies. Twenty dollars per item is a suggested donation. In addition, Hutton partnered with Golden Press Studios in Franklin to create T-shirts for $30.
All proceeds will go toward Black Lives Matter and Dream Defenders in honor of Floyd.
