Avon Community School Corporation has sent out a message to district families that says Avon High School will temporarily switch to e-Learning for the remainder of the week, starting Tuesday, Aug. 11.

According to the district message, high school students will go back to in-person instruction today (Monday, Aug. 10) and then work with teachers for the rest of the week from home.

The district has confirmed with the ICON that as of Aug. 10,  at least three Avon High School students and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

The full message about the e-Learning change can be read below:

Avon Schools is committed to making adjustments as needed to best meet the needs of our students.  Beginning Tuesday, August 11th, Avon High School will transition to e-Learning for the remainder of the week. Students will attend in-person on Monday, August 10th and then work with their assigned teachers for the remainder of the week at home. ACSC  administrators will use this time to continue to review and finalize options for a hybrid approach at Avon High School. A hybrid schedule will allow for fewer students in the school by using both in-person and online instruction. We are planning to utilize a hybrid schedule for the weeks of August 17th and August 24th. It is our current plan to transition back to fully in-person instruction at AHS beginning on August 31st. At this time, no adjustments in school schedules are occurring at any other Avon schools and they will continue in-person instruction next week as scheduled.

The Avon school district was one of the first districts in Central Indiana to return to in-person instruction on July 29. Students are required to wear masks at all times and practice social distancing.

As of Aug. 10, there have been 9 reported cases in the district.  ACSC serves 10,000 students in 12 schools with more than 1,300 employees.

Other cases reported include one at Avon’s Pine Tree Elementary, one at Hickory Elementary, one at  Avon Intermediate School West, one at Avon Intermediate School East, according to district spokeswoman Stacey Moore.

The school district works with the Hendricks County Health Department to notify any close contacts when a positive case is reported. Parents are notified via email or phone when a student in the same building as their student has tested positive.

On July 30, the district confirmed that an Avon High School staff member tested positive for COVID-19  but “had not been at school” that week and had no close contact with any employee or student.

On August 6, the district also confirmed that a Pine Tree Elementary student tested positive for COVID-19.

“The individual who tested positive may return to school upon the direction of County Health Officials,” said Moore.

The district does not release details about individual cases to protect the privacy of students.
