Brownsburg man identified after hitting stopped CSX train

Police are investigating two separate accidents after two vehicles collided with the same train near Brownsburg on Monday night.

The accidents occurred on the CSX train railway near the Crossroads Feed Barn.

Deputies with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office responded to the first accident around 11:45 p.m. in the 6900 block of North CR 900 East.

At that location, deputies discovered that the driver of a 2017 Jeep had driven into the side of a moving CSX train.

The driver of the Jeep was transported from the scene with non-life threatening injuries.  Police believe the driver was not paying attention.

As crews were finishing up with the first crash scene, a second accident was reported on the same railway at the crossing near the 8800 block of East CR 700 North.

That accident happened around 12:24 a.m. Police say the driver of a Lincoln SUV had hit the same train a little further down the railway, which was stopped because of the first accident.

The driver, identified as 43-year-old Dennis Swanson from Brownsburg, was killed on impact, according to police.

The cause of the second crash is still under investigation.

The areas involved have stop signs but no train crossing arms.
