October 22, is #PurpleThursday, a day dedicated to raising domestic violence awareness across the nation. The Hendricks County community can participate by purchasing purple donuts at Carl’s Donuts in Avon, Jack’s Donuts in Avon and Plainfield, Hilligoss Bakery in Brownsburg, and Reds Donuts in Danville.
“Everyone loves donuts,” said Melissa Echerd, Prevention and Education Officer at Sheltering Wings. “Several local bakeries are joining our mission to end the cycle of abuse by offering a one-day-only selection of purple donuts.”
Sheltering Wings, a nonprofit domestic violence shelter, engages in year-round prevention efforts. But, they redouble efforts each October, National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. “Domestic violence is a public health issue that can largely be prevented by the community in which it occurs,” said Echerd. “By involving more people, we can make the homes in our community safer and healthier.”
Along with donuts, bakeries will distribute informational flyers about domestic violence. The flyers will include Sheltering Wings’ 24/7 helpline: (317) 745-1496. Anyone can call the helpline for more information, if they suspect a friend or relative is being abused or if they are personally experiencing abuse.
“We don’t have to stand by and simply deal with the aftermath of domestic violence,” Echerd said. “We can actively take steps to prevent it – even if that’s something as simple as picking up a box of purple donuts on the way to work.”
