Every July during fair week, Bob Smith is one of many who dons an apron, takes his place in front of the very busy grill and serves the treats the community loves best.

Tireless hours at the grill provide the largest annual fundraiser for Franklin Kiwanis Club.

“My first summer helping at the Kiwanis Club fair building was in 1983,” Smith said.

This international service organization has always been a place where the Smith family dedicated their hearts.

Smith’s grandfather and father were not only longtime members; they both served as president.

“I have been privileged to serve as club president three times during my 40 years of being a member,” said Smith, a lifelong Franklin resident.

Sweet corn and summer just go hand in hand, at least in Indiana. The Johnson County Fair took place July 16 – 23. There, Waverly Raibley, 3, daughter of Zach and Havana Raibley of Indianapolis, shows her enthusiasm for sweet corn. (Photo by Sherri Coner)

Known for their commitment to children, Kiwanis Club members sponsor a high school Key club and provide scholarships for three Johnson County high school students looking to attend Indiana universities and colleges. Kiwanis is also a supporter of Riley Hospital for Children.

Along with all the grilling and working, this man also appreciates mini reunions.

“I’m glad to see people at the fair that I don’t see that often,” Smith said.
