The Danville Town Council met May 17. These meetings can be viewed on the town’s YouTube channel after the meeting. The council meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month at Danville Town Hall, 49 N. Wayne St. The next scheduled meeting is June 7.
What happened: An ordinance was approved that amends the 2023 salary ordinance that provides the funding for the hiring of an additional police officer.
What this means: The council approved the hiring of another police officer at their April 19th meeting. The funds to pay for this additional officer comes from the public safety budget. This will bring to eleven the number of Danville police officers.
What happened: Town Planner Lesa Ternet presented an agreement to the council that is with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO). The request was to make the town manager the official signatory to the agreement.
What this means: This agreement is for a grant from the State of Indiana’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI). Town Manager Mark Morgan was given permission to sign the agreement. The grant money will be used for the installation and upgrade of the east interceptor for a proposed hotel project. A developer has purchased property west of the Walmart Supercenter with the intent of possibly building a Fairfield Inn. If built, the hotel will have an entrance off East Main Street.
What happened: The stormwater department was given permission to spend $14,354 with Eco Infrastructure Solutions and $10,129 with Advanced Drainage Systems.
What this means: The funds spent with Eco Infrastructure Solution are to replace a camera head that is used for pipe inspections. The camera head was lost during an inspection, so the cost is covered by an insurance claim. The monies spent with Advance Drainage Systems will cover the cost of purchasing storm pipe to be used in Gary Eakin Park for storm water runoff around the new football field and tower.
What happened: Town Manager Mark Morgan provided information to the council about the possibility of making improvements at the intersection of CR 200 E. and U.S. Hwy 36 as a shared effort with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Morgan was given consent to proceed with information gathering.
What this means: INDOT contacted Danville about this shared project. The intersection is a railroad crossing and improvements would accommodate future commercial development in that area. Morgan also reported that grant monies might be available to the town to help cover the costs. It is projected that these improvements would not come to fruition until 2024-2025. Town Planner Lesa Ternet pointed out that going to CXT Transportation one time, in conjunction with INDOT, will make the project run a lot smoother. This project is still in the fact-finding stage.
What happened: Kevin Hill, co-owner of Danville Dips, was granted his request to have Marion Street closed between Washington Street and Jefferson Street on May 25, from 1-7 p.m. for the Danville-Center Township Public Library’s annual summer reading program kickoff.
What this means: This annual event is a celebration of the end of school and the beginning of the library’s summer reading. Danville Dips provides free ice cream, sponsored by Wright Realtors, to every student who attends the kickoff. Danville Dips and Wright Realtors are located on Danville’s town square.
