For Center Grove High School girls golf coach Cale Hoover, junior Camille Short’s dedication is special.
“I am starting year 23 as a high school coach in various sports, and Camille is one of the hardest workers with which I have worked,” Hoover said. “She is a tireless worker, who is fascinated by the game and spends hours on the range and the course.”
Hoover said Short is a great competitor.
“She never gives in and grinds out every shot of every round,” Hoover said. “I appreciate her willingness to be coached. Camille is also a great teammate. She cares about the team and her teammates.”
Short is currently in the No. 1 golfer spot after playing in the No. 2 spot last season. She averaged 77.3 strokes as a sophomore. Short played in the No. 5 spot as a freshman.
“Individually, I would love to make the all-state team (top 10 at state),” Short said of this season’s goal. “But more importantly, as a team, we have the goal to finish on the podium at state (top four teams). I believe we have the talent to go even farther and take the top spot.”
The Trojans, who finished eighth in the IHSAA state finals in 2021, are seeking their ninth consecutive sectional championship this season.
“I am most proud of our team winning the MIC (tournament) last year,” she said. “We took down Carmel to do so.”
The competition is what makes Short passionate about golf.
“I love competing, whether it is against my teammates or against other schools,” Short said. “The competition is what keeps me going. I also enjoy being a part of a team. Since golf is such an individual sport, I always look forward to playing school season with my teammates.”
Short said she believes she has become a better leader.
“I know how important leadership is to the success of our team,” she said.
On the course, she said the biggest thing she has worked and improved on is committing to each shot.
Short started playing golf when she 11 years old and in sixth grade. She played basketball and softball when she was younger, giving up basketball after third grade and softball in sixth grade once she took up golf.
Short, who said she would like to play golf in college, plans to major in a business-related field.
