Waving the checkered flag

Waving the checkered flag

Indy 500 history runs deep, especially in May. We went to the Checkered Flag Tavern, a hangout for race car drivers since 1947. Stacy Snead, Plainfield, has managed the tavern for eight years and celebrated his first of ownership. Snead grew up in the business with his parents, Snead’s Family Style Restaurant in Lancaster, OH. The menu offers smoked meats and daily food specials. Summer bike days started May 5, and run until the end of September with bands, outdoor seating and fire pit.
With Stacey’s suggestion, we ordered The Big Pig: pulled pork, smoked ham and crispy bacon piled high on a brioche bun with house-made BBQ sauce, the 2017 Bacon Fest winner. Cajun Dry rub wings with house-made Blue Cheese dressing. Loaded BBQ chips with with freshly fried potato chips, queso, beer cheese, pulled pork, corn-black bean salsa, jalapeños, cilantro and sour cream. The Big Pig was huge with layers of flavor – glad we shared. The Cajun dry rub wings were the best, not greasy with meat falling off. I love fresh potato chips, and was not disappointed – delicious.
