High temps but higher spirits for 2017 Quaker Day

Plainfield Friends held its annual Quaker Day celebration Saturday, Sept. 23, which included the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce Quaker Day Parade and other festivities at the Western Yearly Meeting grounds, 203 S East St. in Plainfield. The parade was led by Grand Marshal Richard Carlucci who met spectators lining Bucannon Street. The 90-degree weather may have dampened some shirts but spirits were flying high and dry as the parade greeted onlookers.

Boys Scouts from Pack 429 were gracious enough to hand out water to everyone on the street, including dehydrated photographers.

After the parade, Plainfield Friends members fired up a grill in front of the Western Yearly Meeting. The aroma of grilled pork filled the air as people browsed vendors and mingled up and down the walk. Jim Wilson, who was manning the grill, said they feed around 500 people at the event.

“This is something that Plainfield Friends Quaker men do every year,” he said. “I’m one of the originals and we’ve been doing it since 1973.”

When asked if he could share any cooking tips, “If the hair on your arm gets singed, then your grill is too hot,” he laughed.
