Man of all seasons, Chandler Schubert excels in three sports at Danville

Chandler Schubert isn’t a fan of down time, which is one reason he’s on pace to complete his high school athletic career with 12 varsity letters.
Schubert, a running back for the Danville football team, eventually trades shoulder pads for padded floors as he wrestles for the Warriors. In the spring, the speed partially responsible for Schubert rushing for over 3,000 yards in his football career is evidenced at Danville track meets. In an era of athletic specialization, Schubert is the welcome throwback to previous eras. The only things missing are black-and-white photographs and yellowed newspaper clippings serving as proof of his many accomplishments.
“For the most part, it just keeps me busy throughout the year,” said Schubert, a 5-9, 180-pound senior. “I think football is my favorite sport. I like that it’s a team sport, and I like the brotherhood aspect of it. But the thing I like about wrestling is that you’re competing one-on-one. And track helps me with my explosiveness and speed to prepare for football.”
Schubert has been a factor for all three programs since the 2016-17 school year.
Last winter, he capped his wrestling season in the 160-pound division by advancing to the Evansville semistate for the first time in his career. Schubert runs the 100- and 200-meter dashes in track as well as the 400-meter relay. Last season he finished ninth in both the 100 and 200 at the Avon sectional in respective times of 11.58 and 23.77 seconds.
Schubert’s hours in the weightroom allowed him to bench-press as much as 285 pounds and squat 500. The most weight he’s power-cleaned is 250 pounds. This football season, he used that strength to eclipse the 100-yard rushing plateau in five of Danville’s first eight games, including a 38-carry against Tri-West when he finished with 269 yards.
He entered last week’s regular-season finale at North Montgomery with 10 rushing touchdowns and another as a receiver. As fate would have it, on Oct. 25, Danville returns to Tri-West for a second time this season in a first-round game of Class 3As sectional 29.
The second of four children, Schubert has been a three-sport athlete as long as he can remember. The only difference is that in middle school he played baseball in the spring, not track.
But whether asked to run between the blocks of teammates or the lines on an all-weather oval, Schubert exudes dependability.
“Chandler is one of the best I’ve been around as far as work ethic and the type of character he works with,” said Danville football coach K.C. Woods. “He has a great family, so I’m sure it’s been instilled in him. We don’t worry about anything with him. Chandler has his priorities well in line.”
