The Southside Art League received a grant from Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc. for restoration of the brick on its century old classroom building.
The Southside Art League, located at 229 E. Broadway in Greenwood, is pleased to announce it has received a $20,000 grant from Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc. These funds will be used for restoration of the brick on its century old classroom building.
The current Southside Art League classroom building was once part of The Sanitorium Ideal, a spacious 30-room sanitorium with mineral baths advertised as a health remedy. The facility burned to the ground in 1914, but the pump house for The Sanitorium Ideal survived that fire. The pump house, the larger of two buildings at the Southside Art League, houses classrooms used for regular art instruction as well as seminars and workshops.
The building, being made from over 100-year-old historic brick construction, is in need of maintenance on the brick exterior of the building. The solid masonry construction, also called double brick, was used to construct the building and the building’s stability is dependent on the fitness of the bricks.
The pump house is used as a classroom building with two classrooms currently in use and a third space available for future use on the second floor. The Southside Art League offers fine art classes, including watercolor, oil, pastel and acrylic painting, taught by some of Indiana’s best artists. All levels are welcome in the classes. As well as offering regular classes, the Southside Art League offers workshops by regional artists in a variety of mediums. In addition, the pump house hosts open studio time for artists to
work independently on their artwork. The second building at the Southside Art League is the home of the Off Broadway Gallery, offering a venue for members to display and sell their artworks as well as guests artists from the area.

Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc., a private foundation, was established by Allen W. Clowes, a leading philanthropist in Indianapolis who, during his life, made major contributions to various charitable organizations that promoted or preserved the fine arts, music, literature, education, science and history. Most of these organizations are located in central Indiana.
The primary mission of the foundation is to support charitable organizations that promote or preserve the arts and humanities and to support charitable organizations that were supported by Mr. Clowes during his life or are similar to those supported by Mr. Clowes.

The Southside Art League is a local arts organization serving the greater Southside of Indianapolis and Johnson County for over 50 years. The organization offers fine art classes for all levels, taught by some of Indiana’s best artists. As well as offering classes, SALI offers workshops by regional artists in a variety of mediums. In addition, open studio time for artists to work independently on their artwork is available.
The Off Broadway Gallery offers a venue for members and guests artists to display and sell their artwork. The gallery has monthly openings for featured and guest artists, bringing in visitors from around the area to enjoy refreshments and view the artwork.
