Plainfield has grown by 1,800 acres after spending $1.6 million for a parcel of land formerly owned by the Indianapolis International Airport. The acreage includes Sodalis Nature Park and a significant amount of protected wetland and habitat for the endangered Indiana Brown Bat, as well as species of plant and other animals.
According to a press release issued today, the deal includes 1,700 acres of protected land that will be used to educate people about the bat and efforts to protect it. There is another 140 acres that is unrestricted and expected to be used for “additional recreational use and create a regional park,” according to the release.
The deal was initiated in 2015 as part of the airport’s desire to return land that isn’t needed anymore to local governments.
